WE NEED YOUR HELP!
Volunteers for transport and fosters are desperately needed.
Please fill out the appropriate forms if you would like to join our team
and help our organization.
The 3-3-3 Rule
Three days for initial decompression, three weeks to learn the routine of your household, and three months to be relaxed in your home.
When you are fostering, adopting, or you are a new pet parent this is extremely important to consider.
Shelter Free Rescue is a volunteer run, foster home-based rescue. We depend on the big-heartedness of volunteers, fosters, donators, and adopters so we can continue to rescue, rehabilitate, save, and safely place all our rescues. If you are interested in fostering or adopting, please fill out the appropriate form above, which you can fill out directly and submit. You will be contacted within 24 hours. Every application received is thoroughly reviewed and processed with the one goal of finding the perfect placement for our rescues.
At this time, we will only work with fosters/adopters in NY. However, we will consider out of state for special circumstances. We evaluate all our dogs individually to ascertain their personalities, temperament, dispositions, and interactions with other dogs, cats, and children. Our number one priority is to find the right forever home for our rescues. We ensure all our dogs are healthy and up to date on all vaccinations and spay/neutered.
For a foster volunteer please complete our online foster application. After your application is reviewed and you are considered for one of our dogs, we will email you to set up a phone interview. Then you will be contacted to schedule a home visit. Once that is complete and approved, we will provide you with the next steps. Shelter Free Rescue NY will work with you to accommodate travel to receive your new foster. How long will I be fostering for? We generally ask for a minimum of three or four weeks, and the maximum is open-ended. Can I foster if I have other pets? Yes you can! We do require that you separate your resident pet from your foster for the first 2 weeks. We are happy to provide advice on safe and slow introductions once the separation period is over.
In the event a stray or pet needs to be surrendered to us please provide as much information about the stray/pet as possible. This includes, breed, color, where the animal was found, as well as provide pictures. If the animal is a stray, we will search various lost and found databases to see if the stray is lost and has a home. If we take a surrendered pet the Surrender Form must be completed and submitted. Please note we are a foster base rescue and do not have a facility to house the dog. We solely rely on volunteer fosters to take the animal.
Surrender Prevention
We offer compassion and understanding to owners who can no longer care for their pet due to various circumstances. If you would like advice before you surrender your pet, we can refer you resources for surrender prevention. Please let us know your situation and we will do our best to help you if we can.
